Pell Grants Application

The US Government and a number of private companies award all sorts of educational grants and scholarships. Many famous businessmen and prominent professionals have also set up funds that support college going students. Over 300 billion dollars in education grants are awarded by over twenty five departments working under the US Government.

What is a Pell grant?

An educational grant is simply an ‘award’ or ‘gift’ that covers tuition fees and living expenses. The Pell grant allows students across the country to obtain a college education, regardless of the college or the courses they are enrolled in. Pell grants are one of the most popular types of financial aid sought after by students mainly due to the fact that they can cover tuition fees at almost every college in the country. Pell grants are also the nation’s largest source of need based education assistance serving about one in four of all undergraduate students.

Moreover, despite having being cut back drastically over the recent years, more than 11 billion dollars in scholarships are awarded under the Pell Grant program. More than five million students enrolled in about five thousand universities, tech colleges, vocational institutions and community colleges across the country finance their education through Pell grants.

How do I apply for a Pell grant?

In order to apply for a Pell grant, students need to fill a Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. This application can be filled online through the Department of Education’s website as well. The FAFSA requires students to attach detailed statements of income, tax returns and family bank account statements, which are evaluated by the Department of Education in order to determine the amount of a Pell grant that can be awarded to a particular student. Applicants must be US citizens and have a valid social security number (SSN). They must have a high school diploma or its equivalent GED (General Education Development) certificate.

The amount awarded under a Pell grant varies widely, mainly on the cost of program in which a student is enrolled in and the family’s average income. Almost eighty percent of students who obtain bachelor’s degrees under Pell grants come from families living under the national average annual income. Since their introduction in 1972, Pell grants still remain one of the top educational grants in the country and act as a model on which other scholarships, loans and grants through the country and the world are based upon.
